Special Enrollment Periods for Americans Impacted by Recent Hurricanes

The special enrollment period applies to people in areas declared eligible for FEMA’s “individual assistance” or “public assistance,”and it continues for 60 days after the end of the incident period, as declared by FEMA. But for Florida and Georgia residents affected by Hurricane Michael in October 2018, CMS granted another 60-day special enrollment periodafter the first one ended. So the deadline on the enrollment period varies depending on where you are and when your area was affected by a FEMA-declared disaster.

Georgia: A wide area of southwestern and central Georgia. Special enrollment period continues until February 20, 2019 (it was originally December 22, 2018, but the additional guidance that CMS issued in December gave 60 extra days).

Commitment and Passion

Making a Difference in Family’s Lives
Any family who receives healthcare when they are in need is a meaningful story. But the most moving triumph that we have witnessed through Affordable Care is the case of a 59 year old taxi driver in Atlanta. We were pleased to assist him and his family obtain their coverage three years ago. When he was diagnosed the next year with inoperable liver cancer, the stakes changed as he entered a life and death struggle for survival. His high quality health insurance, put within reach by the Marketplace’s rates, allowed him to go to Emory Healthcare for his treatment. Through a long and painful battle, he held out hope for the only cure – a liver transplant. Less than a month ago, he was discharged from Emory after successful transplant surgery, ready to begin his new life.
